Tony Abbott, Australia's conservative opposition leader, has been declared the narrow winner of a televised election debate as he attempts to rejuvenate his bid for office in the second week of campaigning.
Abbott faced up to Julia Gillard, the Australian prime minister, in a nationally-televised debate on Sunday.
"Abbott probably won it. Tony Abbott had the better of this debate," Laurie Oakes, a veteran political editor, said.
It wasn't yet clear how much of an impact the debate might have on voter opinion.
Earlier opinion polls have shown Gillard is on track to win the August 21 election, where she is seeking voter endorsement after she ousted Kevin Rudd, the former prime minister, in a dramatic party room challenge last June.
A Nielsen survey on Saturday found Gillard had consolidated her lead in the first week of the campaign, while the Reuters Poll Trend on Thursday found Gillard was set to win a larger majority on August 21.
Immigration cuts
Both Abbott and Gillard have promised to cut immigration numbers in a move that has angered Australian business.
Abbott vowed to curb the immigration intake from 300,000 people last year to at least 170,000 a year, and to ensure population growth slows to around 1.4 per cent from more than 2.0 per cent.

An Israeli military report has blamed bad intelligence and planning for the deadly raid on a flotilla of aid ships heading for the Gaza Strip, but recommended no disciplinary action against senior officers.
The investigation, conducted by an army committee, found that the navy did not prepare for the possibility that it would face resistance aboard the Turkish-flagged Mavi Marmara when it raided the ship on May 31.
"The team concluded that not all possible intelligence gathering methods were fully implemented," the Israeli army said in a statement on Monday.
"[And] the operation relied excessively on a single course of action."

The committee found mistakes were made "at quite a senior level" but did not recommend punishments for any of the officers involved in the raid.
It also concluded that "the use of live fire was justified" and called the raid "estimable".
Lieutenant-General Gabi Ashkenazi, the Israeli army chief of staff, said in a statement that he accepted the report's conclusions.

An Islamic woman has won $16,000 in compensation and a written apology after she and her friends were refused permission to go on water rides at Perth's Adventure World because of their religious clothing.
Pakeeza Shaikh won the money this month following a year-long court battle after her group was told they could not go on water rides because of inappropriate swimwear.
Ms Shaikh complained in a private conciliation at the Equal Opportunity Commission that the group had suffered discrimination, and had been humiliated about covering up their bodies in line with their religious beliefs.
The parties could not comment yesterday because of a confidentiality agreement, but it is understood the money has been divided between the five Islamic families visiting the park as a group in February last year. It is understood they had rejected earlier offers of financial compensation until a written apology was included.
Ms Shaikh told _The West Australian _last year the women in the group were told they were not allowed on the water slides because their three-quarter length pants and their long shirts were inappropriate.
She said they were told if they were to enter the water, chlorine levels would have to be raised to counter the unhygienic effect from their clothes.
They were told their clothing could cause injury because it could get caught in the joints of the water slides. One woman in a head scarf was told to leave the baby pool.

CHRISTIAN Democratic Party MP Fred Nile has succeeded in introducing a bill to ban the wearing of the burqa in the NSW Upper House.
Mr Nile introduced his private member's bill, seeking to ban the wearing of the burqa and other face veils in public, shortly after 8pm (AEST) yesterday.
Last month, a debate on the same bill was voted down by the NSW Upper House.
Greens MP John Kaye said only the four Greens MPs and Family First MP Gordon Moyes voted against introducing the bill yesterday.
"Last month the Coalition and the Government did the right thing and said no, they would not allow the Upper House to be home to this kind of racist dog whistling," Mr Kaye said yesterday. "This time they caved in."
Mr Kaye said Mr Nile's bill has opened the door to a "dangerous and divisive attack on one of NSW's communities".
"Letting loose the ugly bigotry that lies behind this bill will only encourage hostility to the Muslim community," he said.
"While no woman should be forced to wear a burqa or any other form of clothing, this absurd bill will do nothing to enhance the rights of women."
Mr Nile has denied the bill is racist, saying his concern lay with issues of security and women's rights.
The bill has been adjourned until September 2010. |

WASHINGTON – In America, a growing number of single Muslims resort to matrimonial websites in their pursuit for life partners, seeing the cyberspace as a more accessible way to find Mr/Ms Right.
"We have people accessing our website from all across the US. We have people from Colorado, Missouri, Nevada," Vaseem Ansari, executive director of the Companionships matrimonial website, told IslamOnline.net.
The website was established in 2004 under the direction of Mohamed Majid, the imam of the All Dulles Area Muslim Society, to help Muslims looking for marriage partners.
"I got so many requests from young people to help them find the right spouses," recalls Majid.
"When it became so many requests, I reached out to young couples and established Companionships with me and my wife putting the program together."
The goal in Companionships program is to provide a platform for young Muslims to meet and be introduced to Islamic matrimonial education.
"We work professionally," said Ansari, adding that they get many professional, educated and articulate people who just need help finding the right spouse.
"Some of them just do not want to go for traditional marriage and want to try a different thing."
