A Notice from moonsighting.com
This book shatters the myth that naked-eye sighting of the new moon and completing 30 days in the case of weather-related or other obscurities are the only two valid methods of determining the month of Ramadan. The author explains that certainty, not actual sighting, is the real objective of the Shari'ah and that the Qur'an does not mandate physical sighting. A careful analysis shows that those hadiths that seemingly require sighting actually require certainty. The assertion that all Muslim scholars prohibit the use of astronomical calculations, both in affirming or negating the month of Ramadan, is not correct. As calculation is now more accurate than naked-eye sighting, due to certain astronomical and scientific advancements, the use of calculation is the closest to the real objective of the Shari'ah and to the spirit of the hadiths. A singer who performed in front of a “mixed audience” of men and women was lashed 39 times to make him “repent,” after a ruling by a self-described rabbinic court on Wednesday.
Rabbi Amnon Yitzhak, founder of the Shofar organization aimed at bringing Jews “back to religion” (hazara betshuva), has made it his recent mission to fight against musical performances for both men and women.
His “judicial panel,” with Rabbi Ben Zion Mutsafi and another member, sentenced Erez Yechiel to 39 lashes in order to “rid him of his sins.” In a video clip of the court posted on the Shofar Web site, Ben Zion said that those who make others sin (mahtiei rabim), such as artists who make men and women attend performances or dance together, have no place in the world to come. He displayed a leather strip he said was made by his father from ass and bull skin, with which Yechiel was to have been whipped. Yechiel, who said, “I accept upon myself the lashing for my sins,” was ordered to stand by a wooden poll with his head facing north (“from whence the evil inclination comes”), his hands tied with a azure-colored rope (“a symbol of mercy”), and served his “sentence.”

More than one billion Muslims across the world have begun observing Ramadan with soaring temperatures in the Middle East and elsewhere set to pose a challenge for many worshippers.
For the next 30 days, believers will observe the holiest month in Islam by abstaining from eating, drinking, smoking and having sex from dawn to dusk.
Religious authorities in Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam, declared Wednesday as the first day of Ramadan, after announcing the sighting of the crescent moon the earlier evening.
King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, home of Islam's holiest shrines, urged Muslims to seek God's "mercy" during the month.
"The holy month inspires Muslims with the noble meanings of compassion, mercy and kindness," he said in a speech, according to the official SPA news agency.
Muslims in Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, the Palestinian territories, Qatar, Syria, Libya, the United Arab Emirates, Yemen, Algeria and Tunisia also began to observe the fast on Wednesday.
In Iraq, the Sunni population begans its observances, but the larger Shia community is not expected to start its fast until Thursday, as is the case in Oman and Iran.

A former Israeli soldier has been sharply criticised for posting images of herself on Facebook posing next to Palestinian prisoners.
Eden Aberjil had put the images in an album on the site entitled "The army: the best days of my life".
Army officials have condemned her behaviour as "shameful" and said they would investigate the matter further.
Palestinian groups said the images were humiliating and revealed the "mentality of the occupier".
The controversial images were among 26 photographs Ms Aberjil posted on her Facebook page.
In one, she is shown smiling next to three bound and blindfolded prisoners and in the second, she is sitting with her face turned towards a prisoner.
Ms Aberjil had already been discharged from the army having completed her mandatory military service, and it was unclear whether she could face disciplinary action.
But a military spokesman said all the details had been passed to her commanders for "further attention".
"This is shameful behaviour by the soldier," the spokesman said in a statement.
Palestinians are routinely blindfolded and handcuffed when arrested by Israeli troops, to prevent them trying to escape.
While the photographs do not depict overt abuse, the Palestinian Authority said they did show "the mentality of the occupier to be proud of humiliating Palestinians".
"The occupation is unjust, immoral and, as these pictures show, corrupting," said spokesman Ghassan Khatib.
Yishai Menuchim, head of the Israeli Committee Against Torture, also criticised the images, saying the incident "reflects an attitude which has become the norm and consists in treating Palestinians like objects, not like human beings".
Last month, six Israeli soldiers were widely criticised for posting a video of themselves performing a dance routine while on duty in the West Bank town of Hebron.
The soldiers escaped disciplinary action after the army said no harm had been done. |

The Imams Council HAS sighted the New Moon. Fasting will begin on Thurs, 12 Aug.. Ramadan Mubarak
The Astronomical New Moon is on August 10, 2010 (Tuesday) at 3:08 UT. On this day, this moon may not be seen in any continent. With difficulty it may be visible in South America. Only in Polynesian Islands on August 10, it will be easily visible. On August 11, it will be easy to see in New Zealand, Australia, South-East Asia, Afirca and Americas, while it will be difficult to see in Northern Asia, Europe, and Canada.
Please see the link for the moonset and sunset time in Toowoomba, Perth, and Makkah. The difference between sunset and moonset is too small for the crescent to be visible in Perth on 10 August. But it would be visible on 11 August.
If you go by the sighting of the crescent criterion the Ramadan starts from Thursday 12 August. But if you go by the birth of the moon criterion the first day of Ramadan is Wednesday 11 August. Islamic Council of Queensland follows the sighting of the crescent criterion, so the first of Ramadan is most likely to be on 12 August in Queensland.
I know Muslims in the world will follow both criteria and hope one day our scholars will agree to follow one criterion so that we could observe the Islamic months consistently.
May Allah accept our fast and guide us to His favours and rewards.
Fi amanillah.
